Despina Vandi

Hardly many know that Despina Vandi was born in fact in…Germany, in the town of Tipigen, in the surroundings of Stuttgart. The real name of the greatest Greek pop-star is Despina Malea. Her parents came back to Kavala, their native place, when Daspina was only 6 years old. She spent the rest of her childhood there and never learned to speak in German. Later she went to study psychology, philosophy and pedagogy in the Solon University.

Her music career started with singing in a piano-bar during her studying. Having found her calling she began courses for singing and phonetics. Her talent and artistic stage-presence were immediately noticed and she was certainly made proposals for recording.

Despina recorded her first album `Gela mou` (Smile to me) in 1994 for the Greek label Minus. In it was included the first hit single of the young performer made in a duet with the superstar Yannis Parios. In 1996 was released another album with still more hits - `Esena Perimeno` (I’m waiting for you).

The next year the young performer spent touring all over Europe and USA. This same year she started working with the distinguished producer Fivos. Their first common project `Deka Entoles` (Ten Commandments) brought them a great success and became a hit. In 2000 the album `Profities` was circulated. It became golden in the day it was put on the market, and only a month later it was already platinum!

In 2001 Despina and Fivos entered into contracts with Heaven Music, which is part of the biggest media corporation in Greece – Antenna Group. On 19th of December 2001 was released a double album with 21 songs called `Gia` (which in Greek means both `hi` and `bye`). It became four times platinum within 11 days only!

In the beginning of 2002 at the World Music Awards in Monaco Despina was declared to be `the best sold Greek performer in the world`. It was the first time a Greek performer, who lived and worked in Greece, had been thus honoured. In 2003 the charts in Greece were conquered by `Ante Gia`.
